The Annapolis Opera is accepting audition applications for principal roles for upcoming seasons, to include full productions and concerts. Possible repertoire could include: Bizet’s CARMEN (in French); Mozart’s COSI FAN TUTTE (in Italian); Puccini’s MADAME BUTTERFLY (in Italian); Donizetti’s DON PASQUALE (in Italian); Strauss’ DIE FLEDERMAUS (in German/English).
Online applications will only be accepted from Tuesday, September 15 through Monday, November 16, 2026 (11:59 PM EST). Applications submitted past the deadline will not be accepted.

Annapolis Opera invites singers to submit their materials for chorus auditions for the upcoming 2026 – 2027 season. In an effort to ensure the breadth of diversity within our community is reflected within our organization, we encourage singers from all backgrounds to apply who are eligible to do so. All voice types are welcome and tenors, baritones, and basses are strongly encouraged to apply.
Singers who were part of the Annapolis Opera chorus during the 2025 – 2026 season do not need to re-apply.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (in English)
Rehearsals begin: Early October 2026
Tech rehearsals: Saturday, October 24 – Wednesday, October 28, 2026
Performances: Friday, October 30, 2026 at 7:30 PM & Sunday, November 1, 2026 & 3 PM
Verdi’s RIGOLETTO (in Italian; tenor/baritone/bass chorus only)

Performances: Friday, March 19, 2027 at 7:30 PM & Sunday, March 21, 2027 at 3 PM
Chorus members who are cast will receive a fee of $750.00 per production.
Audition applications will be accepted through Monday, April 6, 2026 at 11:59 PM (EST). Applicants will be notified of their audition status no later than Monday, April 20, 2026. After applications are reviewed, selected applicants will be invited to audition by appointment on Saturday, May 2, 2026 in Annapolis, MD.
Please carefully read the following requirements before submitting an application.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the audition.
- Applicants must commit to the performance and rehearsal dates (listed above).
- Applicants will present two works, one of which must be in English; any opera aria, operetta piece, or song of contrasting style and tempo.
- An accompanist will be provided. Please bring all music in the correct key. Pre-recorded accompaniment is not permitted.

IMPORTANT DATES

PRIZES
Prizes totaling more than $15,000 will be awarded. All finalists will receive prize money.
ELIGIBILITY
The Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition is open to all singers aged 20-35 (as of the Finals on April 18, 2027), who are permanent residents of the United States, and are not currently, previously, or anticipated to be under professional management. Previous First Prize winners of the Vocal Competition are ineligible to compete.
REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary Virtual Round: The Preliminary round will be a ‘blind’ review, in which Applicants will be identified only by application number and voice type. This round is by submission of 3 arias (MP3/4 audio files only), with piano accompaniment only. Arias should represent a variety of languages and styles, and must include at least one selection in English. Arias should be sung in their original key and their original language. Each aria must be unedited, without recording enhancements, and recorded in one “take.” Please note: selections from oratorio/art songs are not permitted.
Semi-Final Virtual Round: Applicants will submit 3 arias (these can be the same repertoire as the preliminary round or different repertoire), again with piano accompaniment only, but this time in video format [MP4/MOV video files only]. Arias should represent a variety of languages and styles, and must include at least one selection in English. Arias should be sung in their original key and their original language. Each aria must be unedited, without recording enhancements, and recorded in one “take.” Please note: selections from oratorio/art songs are not permitted. Dress for the Semi-Final round is audition attire.
Final In-Person Round: The Final round will be held in-person on Sunday, April 18, 2027 in Annapolis, Maryland. Applicants will submit a list of 5 arias for this round. Singers may select their first aria and the judges will select the second aria. Repertoire for this round need not be the same as for the Preliminary and Semi-Final rounds. Arias should represent a variety of languages and styles, and must include at least one selection in English. Arias should be sung in their original key and their original language. Please note: selections from oratorio/art songs are not permitted. The official pianist for the Competition will play. The Finals round will be a public event and Finalists must be available to appear in-person for the Finals. Dress for the Final round is formal attire. At the conclusion of the Competition, Finalists will attend a brief donor reception and will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the panel of judges. A travel stipend of $150 and patron-hosted housing will be available to all finalists.
