Premiered two days before Christmas in 1893 in Weimar, Germany, and conducted by Richard Strauss, Humperdinck’s opera was widely acknowledged as an immediate masterpiece. Based on the well-known Grimm fairy tale, the work is deeply rooted in Richard Wagner’s musical style. Humperdinck met Wagner at the age of 25, and his influence is undeniable—just as the breathtaking beauty of the music written for this unforgettable score. Join Maestro Kier as he explores what makes this work such a masterpiece and why its music is considered some of the most sublime in the operatic canon.
