Meet the Cast: Keith Harris

We’re having so much fun sharing these Faust cast features every day! Up next, we have Keith Harris, our Valentin!

  • What led you to a career in singing?
    • I joined the Barbershop Harmony Society with my dad when I was 9 years old.  This lead me to seek out a music degree in college.  In college, if you study voice, you study classical voice!  Singing without a microphone and in so many languages was such I a challenge…I wondered if I could actually do it!  And from there I never stopped.

  • Tell us about the character you play in Faust.
    • Valentin, brother to Marguerite, is the head of the household.  The family has deep roots in the community which has lead him to be a natural leader.

  • Do you have any advice for aspiring singers?
    • Having a great teach is important but your teacher cannot practice for you.  The 10,000 hours theory…it’s very real.

  • If you could play any role (regardless or voice part, gender, etc.), what role would it be?
    • I would love to play Billy Budd in Billy Budd and Joe De Rocher in Dead Man Walking.

  • Do you have any pre-show rituals/are you superstitious when it comes to the theater?
    • I try to avoid those and enjoy the day as it unfolds.  Water and sleep…those are the two best friends to a singer.

  • Why do you love opera?
    • It’s the Olympics of music!

  • Other than opera, what are you listening to now? (What’s on your iPod?)
    • Jazz…I think I love jazz because I don’t really know anything about it.  And I intend to keep it that way…it’s one of the few musical styles I can enjoy without analyzing the performance.

  • What do you do for fun/what hobby or interest do you enjoy outside of performing?
    • I love classic cars.  My first car was a 1965 Crovair that I rebuilt with my dad and brother.
