We’re having so much fun sharing these Faust cast features every day! Up next, we have Keith Harris, our Valentin!
What led you to a career in singing?
I joined the Barbershop Harmony Society with my dad when I was 9 years old. This lead me to seek out a music degree in college. In college, if you study voice, you study classical voice! Singing without a microphone and in so many languages was such I a challenge…I wondered if I could actually do it! And from there I never stopped.
Tell us about the character you play in Faust.
Valentin, brother to Marguerite, is the head of the household. The family has deep roots in the community which has lead him to be a natural leader.
Do you have any advice for aspiring singers?
Having a great teach is important but your teacher cannot practice for you. The 10,000 hours theory…it’s very real.
If you could play any role (regardless or voice part, gender, etc.), what role would it be?
I would love to play Billy Budd in Billy Budd and Joe De Rocher in Dead Man Walking.
Do you have any pre-show rituals/are you superstitious when it comes to the theater?
I try to avoid those and enjoy the day as it unfolds. Water and sleep…those are the two best friends to a singer.
Why do you love opera?
It’s the Olympics of music!
Other than opera, what are you listening to now? (What’s on your iPod?)
Jazz…I think I love jazz because I don’t really know anything about it. And I intend to keep it that way…it’s one of the few musical styles I can enjoy without analyzing the performance.
What do you do for fun/what hobby or interest do you enjoy outside of performing?
I love classic cars. My first car was a 1965 Crovair that I rebuilt with my dad and brother.
