Finalists and Awards






Brenda Atzinger, Soprano
Resume: Brenda Atzinger received her BM from the University of Texas - Austin, her MM from Michigan State University and Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She has received grants from Peabody Institute for Queen Elizabeth and from Michigan State University for Opera in the Ozarks. She was a Young Artist at Lake George Opera Company. Her awards include winner of the Michigan State University Honors Competition 2001, the Lansing Matinee Musicale Voice Scholarship Competition 2001, the Birmingham Musicale Voice Scholarship Competition 2001, semi-finalist of the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition 2003, the Frederick Schorr International Voice Competition 2003, the Contemporary Opera Competition 2003, and finalist of the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition 2000. She has sung with Mid-Michigan Opera, Lake George Opera, Harrisburg Opera and Baltimore Opera.

Vocal Selections: "Ach, ich liebte" from Die Entfuhung aus dem Serail by Mozart, "The Jewel Song" from Faust by Gonoud.

Prize: Study Award - The Charles West Carty, George Hughes Carty and Tyler Duncan Hughes Award ($500.00). Given by George and Madeline Hughes in honor of their young grandsons Charles West Carty, George Hughes Caarty and Tyler Duncan Hughes, to encourage their love of opera and the world of music.
Resume: Aurelio Dominguez  received his BM from the University of New Hampshire and his MM in Vocal Performance from the Catholic University of America.  Mr. Dominguez has sung with the Baltimore Municipal Opera Company, in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at Catholic University, and in La Boheme by Puccini at the Asian American Opera Festival, Bethesda, MD.    At the Players Ring Theater, Portsmouth, NH  Mr. Dominguez sang the role of Leopold Bloom in the world premier of Roger Rudenstein’s Ulysses. At the Academia de Canto he sang the role of Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.  Mr. Dominguez, selected as an alternate at the preliminary competition, replaced Mr. Azzam in the Vocal Competition finals.

Vocal Selections: "Cavatina" from La fille du regiment by Donizetti, "Lonely House" from Street Scene by Kurt Weill.

Prize: Study Award - The Severn Town Club Award ($500.00)  The Severn Town Club, part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, works to promote the common interest, to develop its members and to promote the welfare of the community.

Aurelio Dominguez, Lyric Tenor

Leanne Gonzalez, Soprano
Resume: Leanne Gonzalez received her BA in Theatre from the College of William and Mary and a Graduate Diploma/MM in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She was in the Young Artist Program at Sarasota Opera and did the Caramoor Festival. She was a finalist in the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation Competition 2004 and the Palm Beach Atlantic National Vocal Competition 2003, the winner of the Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Competition 2001 and a semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions - New England Region 1998. She has sung with the Opera Company of Brooklyn, Opera Omaha, Heartland Opera Theatre, Bel Canto Opera, and Opera of the Ozarks.

Vocal Selections: "Ombre pallide" from Alcina by Handel, "Quando m'en vo" from La Boheme by Puccini.

Prize: Study Award - The Dr. Paul and Mrs. Herta Lagally Memorial Award ($500.00). Given to promote the vocal arts in Annapolis in memory of Dr. Paul Lagally, a research scientist at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center in Annapolis and his wife Herta Lagally, who was actively involved with the Annapolis Opera since its beginning and served in many capacities from costume mistress to board officer.
Resume: Jinho Hwang received his BM from Yonsei University and is currently working on his MM at the Manhattan School of Music. He received the Manhattan School of Music Scholarship Award and was a finalist in the Vera Scammon S.O.S, International Vocal Competition 2004, the James Parkins Opera Foundation Vocal Competition 2002 and 2003 and the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Vocal Competition 2002.

Vocal Selections: "La mia letizia infondere" from I Lombardi by Verdi, "Recondita armonia" from Tosca by Puccini, "Che gelida manina" from La Boheme by Puccini.

Prize: Second Prize - The Lindley Incentive Award ($1,200.00). Given in honor of Dr. Karl Solibakke, whose dedication to the discipline and art of opera was seminal in his development as a scholar with a deep understanding of the intersection of the literary and musical arts, to encourage the recipient to grow both musically and personally.

Jinho Hwang, Tenor

Jason Kaminski, Baritone
Resume: Jason Kaminski received his BFA in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon and is completing his MM In Opera at the University of Maryland. His awards include winner of the Marcella Sebrich Competition 2004, the Tuesday Musical Club Scholarship Competition 2002-2005 and the Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artist Competition in 2001. He has performed with the Pine Mountain Music Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy.

Vocal Selections: "Avant de quitter ces lieux" from Faust by Gounod, "Largo al Factotum" from Il Barbierre di Sivigliaby Rossini.

Prize: Study Award - The Clara Berenson and Richard Higgins Memorial Award ($600.00). Given in remembrance of Clara Berenson who studied voice, loved opera and was a loyal patron of Lyric Opera of Chicago and in remembrance of Richard Higgins, a member of the Peabody Conservatory of Music for thirty years, a member of the Board of Directors of Annapolis Opera, and an adjudicator for the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition.
Resume: James Kee received his vocal training at Curtis Institute of Music. He has received training in acting at the Shakespeare Theatre Workshop and in dance with the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre.  Mr. Kee received the Director's Prize from Opera Index, Inc. and placed second in the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition. He has sung with the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Palm Beach Opera and the Chautauqua Institute.

Vocal Selections: "Hai gia vinta la causa" from Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart, "Tanzlied" from Die tote Stadt by Korngold.

Prize: Study Award - The Todd Duncan and Samuel and Frieda Kahn Memorial Award ($550.00). Given in remembrance of Todd Duncan, in tribute to his performance in the role of George Gershwin's original Porgy in Porgy and Bess and in remembrance of Samuel and Frieda Kahn, who instilled an enduring love of opera in their daughter Thea Lindauer, former president of Annapolis Opera.

James Kee, Baritone

Jung-A Lee, Soprano
Resume: Jung-A Lee received her MM from the Manhattan School of Music and is currently working on her DMA at the University of Maryland where she has a Teacher Assistantship.  She has received the Aspen Music Festival Full Scholarship, MSM Scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music as well as the President Award Scholarship.  Ms. Lee was a finalist in the Liederkranz Foundation Voice Competition 2003, the Giulio Gari International Voice Competition 2002, the Palm Beach Opera Voice Competition 2003; second place winner of the National Opera Association Vocal Competition 2003; and National third place winner of NATS Voice Competition 2004.  Ms. Lee has performed with the Korean National Opera Company, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, BASOTI and has been in the Intermezzo Young Artist Program.

Vocal Selections: "Cara Nome" from Rigoletto by Verdi, "Bester Jungling mit Entzukken" from The Impressario by Mozart.

Prize: Third Prize - The William Boldyga and Betty Myers Incentive Award ($1,000.00).  Given by Bill Boldyga and Betty Myers to encourage the development of operatic talent and the Vocal Arts in Annapolis.
Prize: Audience Choice Award ($300.00). Given in memory of Antonio DiLeonardo, father of Anna Marie DiLeonardo Musterman, former president of the Annapolis Opera.  Mr. DiLeonardo enriched his duaghter's life and spirit with the love of opera, which has nurtured her throughout her life.
Resume: Lori Lind received her BM from the University of Alabama, MM from Peabody Conservatory of Music and Artist Diploma from the Catholic University of America.  She was in the Resident Artist Program at Tri-Cities Opera. Her awards include finalist in the Shubert Performing Arts Center Opera Competition 2000, the Jenny Lind Vocal Competition 1998 and 2000, the Connecticut Opera Annual Vocal Competition 2000 and 2001 and the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition 2003. She received the Merit Scholarship from the Catholic University of America, the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the University of Alabama. She has performed with Lyric Opera Cleveland, Tri-Cities Opera, the Ravello Festival and Opera Vivente.

Vocal Selections: "D'amor sull'ali rosee" from Il Trovatore by Verdi, "Depuis le jour" from Louise by Charpentier.

Prize: Grand Prize - The Grace Gelinas Clark Memorial Award ($1,600.00). Given in memory of Grace Gelinas Clark, founder of the Annapolis Civic Ballet Company and the Grace Clark School of the Dance. During her 40-year career as a ballet teacher and choreographer, Mrs. Clark brought great beauty and joy to the many audiences who attended the performances.
Prize: The Director/Conductor Award ($500.00). Given by Braxton Peters, Annapolis Opera's Stage Director and Ronald Gretz, Annapolis Opera's Conductor and Musical Director.  Messrs. Peters and Gretz offer the award as an incentive to the Grand Prizewinner to pursue an operatic career.

Lori Lind, Soprano

Damian Savarino, Bass-baritone
Resume: Damian Savarino received his BM in Vocal Performance and Education from Ithaca College and his MM in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. He has held apprenticeships with Bay View Music Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera and Central City Opera House Association. He has sung with Commonwealth Opera, Light Opera Oklahoma, Ohio Light Opera and Operafest of New Hampshire.

Vocal Selections: "Il lacerato spirito" from Simon Boccanegra by Verdi, "Non piu andrai" from Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart.

Prize: Study Award - The Links of Annapolis Award ($500.00).  The Links of Annapolis, a professional women's organization, is divided into four programs: Services to Youth, International Trends, National Trends, and the Arts.
Resume: Nemeh Azzam received his BM and MM in Vocal Performance from the Catholic University of America. He was a finalist in the Marian Andersen International Competition 1998 and winner of the American Opera Scholarship Society Competition 1996, 1997, 1998; the Young Singer Foundation Award 1999, the Presser Foundation Young Artist Award 2000; the NATS Competition 2001 and an award winner at the Metropolitan Opera Regional Competition 2001. Additionally he received the Khalil Gibran Young Artist Award in 1996 and the Catherine Filine Shouse Young Artist Award in 1995. He has sung with Bel Cantanti Opera, the Maryland Opera Company, Virginia Opera, the Opera Ensemble and the Shaker Mountain Festival.

Vocal Selections: Due to illness, Mr. Azzam withdrew from the competition.
